Keynote Speaker
Rev. Nancy Johnston VardenNancy grew up on the coast of North Carolina– an ideal place for someone that spent years learning and teaching sailing in her youth. Nancy moved inland for college and pursued a degree in Recreation at North Carolina State University. While at University Nancy worked with various youth outreach organizations that lead her to pursue vocational ministry in the United Methodist Church. She followed this call from God to Duke University where she earned her Masters of Divinity. With over 20 years of ministry experience Nancy has led churches in Oxford, England, suburban North Carolina, and currently rural Western Kentucky.
Nancy and her husband, John, were married in May of 1999. John is also an Ordained Elder in The United Methodist Church. They along with their daughters Virginia, Hannah, and Miriam now live in Fulton, Kentucky. All five are the workforce for their small family farm that currently is home to 42 goats, 35 chickens, 3 cats, 2 pigs, 2 dogs, 1 donkey, 1 horse, and 1 Welsh pony. Nancy enjoys pastoral ministry in the challenging context of the rural south in the USA. She loves the enduring wisdom of fellow Kentuckian Wendell Berry that helps frame the ministry place Nancy currently finds herself– “There are no unsacred places; there are only sacred and desecrated places,” (How to Be a Poet a poem by Wendell Barry)
